Welcome to beautiful
Golden Bay, New Zealand.

Pohara Beach

Imagine a hidden paradise at the end of the road, where golden beaches, alpine valleys, and tranquil fishing rivers share a close proximity with the sea..This is Golden Bay - your gateway to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks and much more...

Farewell Spit

Stretching 35km across Golden Bay, Farewell Spit is New Zealand's longest sandspit. It is growing in length all the time as sand is swept up the West Coast and deposited on the Spit. A World Heritage Nature Reserve, Farewell Spit is home to over 100 species of birds.

Pupu Springs

The largest freshwater springs system in New Zealand, Te Waikoropupu (Pupu) Springs is one of Golden Bay's best known attractions. The Springs feature a choice of short easy walking tracks which are well worth exploring.

Can you spot the trout hiding in the shallows in the photo below?

An easy 10 minute walk through spectacular limestone formations, crowned with huge Northern Rata trees, to a viewing area overlooking Golden Bay. The Grove Scenic Reserve is part of the "Crimson Trail" - so called because of the blaze of red Rata flowers around Christmas time.

One of the South Island's best and safest swimming beaches, Pohara is also the site of many fun activities, such as the annual Sandcastle Competition, the Beach Horse Races and Fire Sculpture Display. Pohara also features a Tennis Club, Bowling Club, Restaurants, Cafes, Bars and a nearby Golf Course.

The drive from Pohara towards the Abel Tasman National Park leads you past the stunning rocky outcrops of Tarakohe. Popular with rock-climbers, this is probably Golden Bay's most spectacular stretch of coastal road. Take care when driving here because you may see penguins crossing the road.

Wainui Falls is an easy 40 minute walk. Featuring a swingbridge across the river, stunning views and beautiful native bush, Wainui Falls is a popular though uncrowded attraction. Some people can see a woman's face in the rocks to the right of the Falls - can you? Check out the photo below...

But wait! There's more - much more. You'll need more than a day to see the Bay. More than a week or even a month. You could live here your whole life and still not see it all. Our friendly staff know this region well and are happy to recommend local attractions and outings.

Other attractions which may appeal include: Golden Bay's Museums, Harwoods Hole, Wharariki Beach, Seal Colonies, the Cobb Valley, Rawhiti Caves, Totaranui, the Devil's Boots and the Aorere Goldfields - and that's just scratching the surface of what Golden Bay has to offer....

Artistic Golden Bay

The creative heart of New Zealand, the Northwest Nelson region is home to more artists and craftspeople than anywhere else in the country. Drive down almost any road in Golden bay and you are likely to see artist's workshops and galleries. Here, you will meet the artists, see them at work and enjoy the benefits of buying art and craft at country prices.
